I had a new schedule for this blog all worked out (it needs a new layout too, but I’m not quite ready for that) but then an unexpected trip back home put a halt to everything. I had some Hallowe’en-type posts more or less ready to go, but I think I’m going to skip over them rather than putting myself behind for Sci-Fi Month (yay! Sci-Fi Month!). Plus, I haven’t touched a book since my last Read Last Week post, leaving my reading exploits limited to two magazines (both Christmas themed because I’m a sucker who tells myself not to look at Christmas stuff until after Hallowe’en and then never sticks to it) and a bunch of posts over at Ask A Manager. So here’s a Weekly Miscellany post instead of all the things I’ve just mentioned. (Rambly intros are rambly.)
Added to Wishlist
- The Emperor’s Babe – Bernadine Evaristo. Hate the title, hate the cover, am totally intrigued by the premise.
- Long Way Down – Jason Reynolds. A novel in verse describing a 67 second (!) time frame.
- The Wrong Stars – Tim Pratt. Are there more exciting words for sci-fi fans than ‘rag-tag crew’ 😉
- Father Christmas’ Fake Beard – Terry Pratchett. Christmas-themed Pratchett!!
- Giant Days, Volume 1 – John Allison, Lissa Treiman & Whitney Cogar. This has been on my radar for a while but reading a preview of it recently has reignited my interest.
- The Midnight Dance – Nikki Katz. A creepy, isolated boarding school for aspiring ballerinas? Yes, please.
- The Grip of It – Jac Jemc. This looks deliciously unnerving.
- Outsiders: Five Women Writers Who Changed The World – Lyndall Gordon. Ladies FTW.
Articles of Note
- The New Mutants Trailer Is Here and It Is Freaking Scary. YES. Yes, yes, yes. I really hope the movie lives up to the trailer because the trailer is soooo good.
- First Full Length Trailer for Marvel’s Runaways Released. See above but for very different reasons. RUNAWAYS!!! <3
- Kazuo Ishiguro Keeps Calm During Nobel Prize Frenzy. Of course he does. I’m so behind on my Ishiguro-reading…
- The 30 Best Movies from Books on Netflix. I didn’t even know Full Metal Jacket was based on a book.
- 31 Books That Will Put You in the Halloween Spirit. What on Earth is Harry Potter: A History of Magic doing on here?
- 7 Powerful Vintage Reads To Pick Up This Black History Month. I would have preferred more of a focus on UK-related books since it’s Black History Month in the UK and not the USA, but I’ll give Vintage a grudging pass.
- Does Scotland need a museum dedicated to our role in trans-Atlantic slavery? One campaigner tells BBC Timeline it’s time Glasgow faced up to its “uncomfortable past”. Although I don’t think this piece does enough to recognise the (admittedly small) efforts Glasgow has made to acknowledge its role in the slave trade, I agree with the overall point pretty wholeheartedly.
- It’s Black History Month – And At Last We’re Celebrating British Heroes. I tried to do a Black History Month display for a few years in the library I used to work in and it was hard. Despite Black History Month covering the contributions of black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) in the UK, it’s so hard to find UK specific material. Things have definitely started to change though, which can only be a good thing.
Bookmarked Recipes
- Chocolate Chip Meringue Cookies. I half think these might be awful but I’m willing to take the chance in the hope that they’ll be as delicious as they are surprising.
- 3 Scary Easy Halloween Cupcakes. These are so simple but so effective. Definitely planning to make these when I have more time (so… next year, then).
- Pear Bourbon Smash Cocktail. I’m salivating a little just looking at the name of this cocktail.
